CHENNAI: Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand might be in Germany but he has been doing his bit by raising money to fight Coronavirus pandemic. After raising over Rs 6 lakh for PM-CARES fund earlier this month by featuring in an online chess event, the 50-year-old will now be playing against a team of stand-up comics in an online charity match on Saturday afternoon.

While Anand will team up with the likes of Vidit Gujrathi, Nihal Sarin, Tania Sachdeva and Croatia’s Antonio Radic, the comics team will comprise Biswa Kalyan Rath, Samay Raina, Abhishek Upamanyu and Aakash Mehta. “We all know that nothing raises our spirits like some laughter. On Saturday, we will be combining chess and comedy. It should be interesting to find out what it is that tickles most people about chess. I am looking forward to it and hope to raise some money for charity,” Anand told TOI on Friday.

Vidit, who is the country’s second ranked player, already has the experience of playing against the comedians during an event on April 14. “I think it’s a fun event. Many people liked the previous chess streams. It had the right mixture of chess and entertainment. Also the impressive part of Saturday’s event is that all the money raised will be used for Covid19 relief,” said Vidit.

Tania is more than willing to do her bit to raise money for charity. “To contribute in any way in these difficult times is something all of us feel strongly about. To be able to do that through our game makes it even more special. There’s going to be chess and a whole lot of laughs, something all of us can do with now,” said Tania.
