Another cop falls prey to Covid-19 in Mumbai | Mumbai News


MUMBAI: Another police constable attached to Kurla police station died of Covid-19 on Tuesday taking the toll of the policemen who died because of the virus in the city to 19. The 48-year-old police constable was attached to Kurla police. He was on leave for last one year and was taking treatment for cancer.
Kurla police said that deceased constable was a resident of Thane and was admitted to Bombay hospital since May 21. “He was already on medical leave for last one year and after he tested positive he was admitted to Bombay hospital where his condition worsen and passed away on Tuesday,” said Dattatray Shinde, senior inspector of Kurla police.
In all around 1,526 cops from all over the state have tested positive and till now 29 of them have succumbed to Covid-19. In Mumbai the the government has built up two dedicated Covid centres at Marol and Kalina with the help of Maharashtra police housing. “After studying the pattern we have also started counselling policemen how to handle Covid patients and what precautions should they take while maintaining the law and order in the containment zones. Those cops who are likely to come directly in contact with Covid patients have been given PPE kits to wear as protective gear and also to take HCQ tablets and multivitamins,” said an IPS officer.
The state government’s announcement of Rs 50 lakhs to kin of the deceased cop and a job for kin and another 20 to 25 lakhs from the police walfare has further strengthen their faith.’
