For many years the Apple Watch was missing a popular feature: sleep tracking. However, at WWDC 2020 earlier this month, Apple unveiled watchOS 7 and confirmed that sleep tracking is finally coming to the Watch. And now Apple has explained why sleep tracking took a while to arrive and how it will be different from that on Fitbit and other smartwatches.
Kevin Lynch, vice president, technologies, at Apple, told The Independent that the idea behind the feature is to help people avoid distractions before they go to bed and help them get a good night’s sleep. “There are so many things in the world to distract us and occupy our attention. Supporting people in managing that transition is where the magic is,” he explained.
“There could be anxiety that people have about going to sleep, and that anxiety itself can actually cause more problems in terms of going to sleep,” Lynch further explained. “Many people are already well aware that they haven’t been getting enough sleep, and so we’re not adding to that, but we are positively acknowledging when you have achieved your goals,” he said.
Apple, which is extremely serious about what data it uses, makes it clear that sleep tracking on the Watch will be different. “We treat the data that’s being collected on a user’s device with a high level of sensitivity around privacy. Apple is not seeing your sleep data,” Lynch told CNET in another interview.
Lynch also explained that duration is the key metric or data point that is needed to track how people are sleeping. “Even in our studies, we had people wear EEGs on their heads, so we got insight into the electrical activity of their brain, in addition to what we’re able to sense on the wrist with Apple Watch,” Lynch explained.
