BEST procures 30 new single-decker AC buses on wet lease | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: The BEST has procured 30 new single-decker AC buses on wet lease for the fleet.
“This is just the beginning of several such buses being inducted in the fleet to ensure that we cope up with the demand from commuters,” said an official. The daily ridership in BEST has grown by 500% in just 3 months — from 2.5 lakh to 15 lakh. Commuters have been complaining of long waits at the bus stops and many have to change buses to reach their destinations.
“The BEST should improve the frequency of buses and deploy more buses on busy routes,” said transport expert Ashok Datar, who said that it was high time the fleet size was increased.
The BEST plans to procure as many as 3,000 new buses on wet lease. As per the last budget, BEST had proposed that its fleet size will be 6,467 by March next year. “The BEST-owned bus fleet will be restricted to 3,337 while the rest will be on wet lease,” said an official.
The cash-strapped transport body expects funding to the tune of Rs 700 crore from the BMC as per announcement made in civic budget.
