MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Tuesday reserved its order on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by an NGO, Jan Swasthya Abhiyan which raised six main issues related to Covid-19 and the state’s response to tackle it.
The PIL, said counsel Mihir Desai, sought intervention by the judiciary on whether the state was correct in permitting Hydroxychloroquine to treat Covid without registering it as a new drug first and whether it could be given to pregnant women and children, when the Centre’s guidelines prohibit that.
He also said there was a need to lower the prices of Covid-19 tests at private hospitals and need to test asymptomatic health care workers as well.
He said there ought to be be better mechanism to ensure 20 percent beds at private charitable hospitals reach the poor and needy patients. Special civic counsel AY Sakhare and additional solicitor general Anil Singh said the civic body and government had taken adequate steps in handling the issues raised.
