Footpath destroyed after tree cuttings to make illegal gate entry in Navi Mumbai | Navi Mumbai News

NAVI MUMBAI: The Vashi based citizens and activists have urged the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to take tough measures against those who recently cut two large trees at sector 8, and later also damaged the footpath with the intention of making an illegal gate entry to a plot.
Former standing committee member and chairperson of NMMC environment committee, Divya Gaikwad, said, “I am forced to write a reminder letter to NMMC about the August 16 incident at sector 8, next to plot numbers 130 and 131, where two trees were brutally chopped down. The local residents have now realized that this illegal act was done with the intention to make a pathway gate to the plot from here. That is why the footpath has also been damaged. This is public property that has been destroyed.”
She further added, “Although the civic body did lodge an FIR with regards to the tree cuttings, only two poor men were made as the accused, but the mastermind behind this devious plan has not been named. I had asked the Vashi ward to at least plant two neem tree saplings at the same spot to thwart any further illegal activity at the site; but sadly no follow-up action has been taken by NMMC. This is forcing us to believe that the civic officials may be hand-in-gloves with the accused.”
When TOI contacted the deputy municipal commissioner (gardens), M Mahale, he said, “We did plant two peepal tree saplings at the site of tree cuttings in Vashi. With regards to the footpath damage, the encroachment department is looking into the issue.”
However, Gaikwad retorted, “I have not seen any peepal tree saplings at the spot. The gardens department officials can surely accompany the local residents at the site to inspect how many illegal changes have taken place here in a span of 10 days. Do not remain mute witness to this, and take stern action, is what we the people are demanding from NMMC now.”
