On August 23, 2013, roof of a newly constructed building of Dharanidhar Autonomous College had collapsed causing injury to five students. The OHRC had taken suo motu cognizance of this case and issued notice to the government. Later the district administration had provided monetary help to the injured at Rs 5000 to four students and Rs 10000 to one student Sangeeta Majhi as she had sustained severe injury.
On January 10, the rights panel had recommended the state government to pay Rs 5000 more compensation to the students in addition to the amount already paid, recover extra money paid by the government from the contractor and action against the engineer or technical person and the contractor. On February 10, the OHRC directed the higher education department to file compliance report in the case.
“As directed by the commission, an extra compensation to the tune of Rs 5000 has also been paid to each injured student in addition to the amount already paid earlier,” said the higher education department compliance report.
The extra expense incurred by the state is recovered from the organisation responsible for casting of the roof. A criminal proceeding has already been registered at Keonjhar Town police station and the same is pending for adjudication in the court of sub-divisional judicial megistrate, Keonjhar.
