A teenage girl allegedly stabbed her brother to death to “remove obstacle from her love affair” in Amreli town late on Monday with police saying the girl took inspiration for the crime from a popular television serial.
Amreli police said that the incident took place at around 6 pm on Monday when Siddharth Dafda (23) was watching television with his 17-year-old sister at their residence in Asopalav Society on Chital road of Amreli. All of a sudden, the teenager stabbed her brother in chest with a kitchen knife. As Siddharth tried to escape, the girl chased him to the door and before he could open it, stabbed him again in neck.
“The stab wound in neck led to profuse bleeding and killed Siddharth on the spot. As Siddharth was lying in front of the door, the girl dragged his body away to come out of the room. She washed her hands and clothes and went outside their home and told neighbours that his brother had committed suicide,” Amreli city police inspector Ashok Pandya said on Tuesday.
Police said that the accused’s father is an advocate in Amreli while her mother is a health worker in Chavand village in Lathi taluka of Amreli district. The parents were away for work when the incident took place.
Pandya further said that it was only after the victim’s parents raised suspicion against their daughter that police started questioning her. After a while the girl confessed her crime. Police have recovered the clothes that she wore while stabbing her brother and which she washed later on. Police also spotted blood stains on the washbasin in the house.
“The girl says that her parents had been neglecting her for years and to avenge this neglect, she killed her brother. However, her parents are claiming that she was in love with one Navnit Madhad, a neighbour and that Siddharth did not approve of it. Therefore, she murdered her brother as she considered him as an obstacle in her relationship with Madhad,” Pandya, who is investigating the case, further said.
Police said that Madhad was also a student. “However, he claims that he was away to Ghela Somnath (in Vinchhiya taluka of Rajkot district) on Monday and has nothing to do with the crime. But we shall analyse his call details to check his location on Monday and to know if he was in touch with the accused girl,” the inspector added.
Police said that the girl learnt the modus operandi of the murder from a television crime serial.
Based on a complaint filed by the girl’s father, Amreli city police have booked the teenager and Madhad for murder.
