World champion PV Sindhu has already withdrawn from this event citing personal reasons.
It is learnt that Satwik and Chirag have communicated their decision to the Badminton Association of India (BAI). With Satwik testing positive for Covid-19 and completing home quarantine only on Saturday. India will miss their best doubles team who got the Arjuna Award.
Satwik will take the Covid-19 test on Monday.
“It is impossible to expect Satwik to play in the Thomas Cup. He has just completed quarantine. We will know his position tomorrow. Even if he returns negative he cannot start practice for another 10 days. That’s why they took this decision,” a BAI official told TOI.
With Satwik unavailable, Chirag will also miss out. “It is not advisable to disturb such a successful pair. Moreover, they have decided to stay as a team and utilise the time for practice. Most probably they may feature in the Denmark Open,” the official said.
Saina, Kashyap to attend camp
Meanwhile, the national camp for the Thomas and Uber Cup will be held at Pullela Gopichand Academy here from September 7 to 27. Parupalli Kashyap, who was not called for last month’s national camp, has been picked for this camp along with his wife Saina Nehwal.
The team selection for Thomas and Uber Cup is on September 17.
BAI secretary Ajay Singhania hoped that the camp would give enough time for the shuttlers to get ready for the big tournament. “It‘s important to conduct a national camp ahead of the Thomas & Uber Cup. We are grateful to SAI for helping with the camp and all the support in creating a safe and secure environment for the players and support staff. This camp will give our shuttlers the required momentum and prepare themselves ahead of the final selection,” BAI secretary Singhania said.
