MUMBAI: A pregnant woman prisoner at the Thane jail, who was sent to Thane civil hospital after she complained of uneasiness, was tested Covid-19 positive when she returned to the jail after 10 days of treatment. She was again sent to the hospital for Covid-19 treatment. Meanwhile, Nitin Vaychal, superintendent of the Arthur Road jail, has been transferred to the Ratnagiri jail.
“The woman was admitted in the Thane Civil Hospital for 10 days. When she returned to the jail, she was subjected to test and her Covid-19 report was positive. Hence, we sent her to the hospital for treatment again,” said Deepak Pandey, inspector general of police, Prisons (South region). Apart from this, a jail guard and another constable, posted outside the Thane jail have also been found Covid-19 positive and sent for treatment. Three other jail constables who were in close contact with the duo, tested negative. Earlier this month, a 45-year-old female, lodged at the Byculla women’s prison, was tested positive. After getting treatment at the JJ Hospital, she was tested negative and has been sent back to the prison. Moreover, out of the 158 prisoners, who tested coronavirus positive earlier this month, at the Arthur Road jail, 120 have now tested negative for Covid-19. Out of 26 police personnel at the Arthur Road jail, 26 have been cured for Covid-19 and will be resuming duty in the first week of June, said Pandey.
Meanwhile, Vaychal, who was quarantined for 14 days after his orderly tested positive, reported to work last week. He submitted an application for sick leave for 10 days and was subsequently transferred to his original posting at the Ratnagiri jail. He was on deputation in the Arthur Road jail. He has been replaced by senior superintendent Jayant Naik, who was Superintendent at the Refresher Training Center in Taloja.
