NAVI MUMBAI: An English teacher from a Koparkhairane based municipal school is in trouble for uploading her dance videos on the TikTok mobile app.
A social activist, Deepali Mutta, has sent a legal notice to NMMC seeking strong action against this teacher. The notice states that the teacher’s song and dance sequences uploaded on TikTok are inappropriate as some of these videos were shot inside the school premises.
Many of her students in ninth and tenth standards have also liked her online videos.
The deputy municipal commissioner (education) Nitin Kale, said: “We have sought the teacher’s formal explanation with regards to her TikTok videos. Following this, appropriate action will be taken.”
In one of the uploaded videos, the teacher is seen checking exam paper answersheets, while a song plays in the background.
City based psychiatrist, Dr Kavita Vaidya, feels that as long as the videos are not vulgar and do not overtly influence the students in a negative way, the teacher has the right to express her creative interests after duty hours.
“Generally, my opinion is teach children to exercise self control and prioritisation in life. Then it hardly matters who is doing what. As far as the teacher is concerned, does her video making interfere with her quality and efficiency of work or duty, is the area of concern. The comment or caption above this video I saw seems inappropriate. It appears that the teacher is seeking attention from her students,” said Dr Vaidya.
Another activist, BN Kumar, said: “Departmental action can be initiated against this school teacher who teaches English to ninth and tenth standard students, on the ground that the school building has been misused to make a dance videos.”
