Six people have been arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a woman at Rangiya in Kamrup district, with the police still looking for the seventh culprit involved in the crime. One is related to the couple.

“We have so far arrested six persons including a relative of the woman. While three of them were arrested on Friday night, three others were arrested on Saturday,” Kamrup SP Indrani Barua told The Sunday Express.

According to reports, a newly-wed couple from Tamulpur in Baksa district were on their way to a relative’s house in Kekenikuchi village under the Rangiya police station when they are waylaid by three men. They beat up the husband and dragged the woman into a field where they where joined by four more men who allegedly raped her.

The woman’s niece who had accompanied the couple, however, managed to escape and ran to a nearby village seeking help. By the time help arrived the culprits had disappeared, leaving the woman in a semi-conscious state and her husband lying unconscious.
