TUTICORIN: The Crime Branch CID will take a call on registering a murder case in connection with the custodial deaths of P Jeyaraj of Sathankulam and his son, J Beniks, as the probe progresses, said CB-CID inspector general of police K Shankar on Wednesday.
The state government on Monday ordered transfer of the case to the CBI. On Tuesday, the Madras high court ordered interim transfer of the case to the CB-CID till the CBI took over the investigation.
The case papers were handed over to the CB-CID on Tuesday. “A case has been registered. We have come for the probe and it is going to begin,” Shankar told reporters in Tuticorin.
The high court on Tuesday observed a perusal of the preliminary postmortem report and the report submitted by the Kovilpatti judicial magistrate — based on the statement given by a woman head constable — showed that a prima facie material was available to register a case under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC.
The woman head constable told the JM that the father -son duo were assaulted by personnel at the Sathankulam police station with lathis the whole night after their arrest on June 19.
