MUMBAI: A 35-year-old waiter has been held for the double murder of two staffers whose bodies were found in the water tank of a resto bar in Mira Road on Thursday night.
Kallu Yadav, originally from Pipri town of Uttar Pradesh, was held from Pune. He was absconding after the murder and became the prime suspect.
Yadav murdered the manager of Shabari restaurant and bar Haresh Shetty (48) and waiter Naresh Pandit (52) with an axe while they were asleep in the restaurant.
While majority of the restaurant staff had left for their home states during lockdown, the three stayed in the restaurant.
Yadav had a fight with the victims on being served dal and rice everyday during the lockdown. Yadav, a waiter told the police that Shetty and Pandit ordered food from outside while he was being made to eat dal and rice cooked by him in the restaurant.
Yadav told the police that he was beaten up by the victims when he objected to them ordering food from outside.
In order to take revenge, he axed the victims to death. He assaulted them on their head, neck and face. He dumped the bodies in the water tank and fled. The murder is believed to have taken place on June 1 after which he fled.
The bodies were discovered on Thursday night when the owner Gangadhar Payade (63) complained of foul smell when he came to the restaurant on Thursday.
Yadav had fled with the cellphones of the victims. The Local crime branch of Thane rural police tracked Yadav’s cellphone and nabbed him from a bar in Pune.
Mira Road police said that Yadav had served jail term in a murder case in Kolkatta. Cases of assault are also registered against him with Swargate police in Pune.
