PM Modi Inaugurates Navi Mumbai International Airport: A New Era for Indian Aviation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase 1 of the Navi Mumbai International Airport, a ₹19,650 crore project that promises to revolutionize air travel in India. The airport is designed to be one of the most modern and eco-friendly in the world, with cutting-edge facilities and sustainable infrastructure.
Key Features:
Capacity: The airport will handle 90 million passengers per annum and 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo once fully operational.
Sustainable Infrastructure: The airport features dedicated storage for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), solar power generation of approximately 47 MW, and EV bus services for city-wide connectivity.
Water Taxi: NMIA will be India’s first airport connected by Water Taxi, reflecting a modern, eco-friendly approach to passenger and cargo transport.
Digitalization: The airport will be fully digital, with facilities for pre-booking parking slots, online baggage drop, and streamlined immigration services .
Impact:
Boost to Economy: The airport is expected to attract investment and new businesses to the area, enhancing economic opportunities for farmers in Maharashtra and connecting them to markets in the Middle East and Europe.
Improved Connectivity: NMIA will ease congestion at Mumbai’s existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and position Mumbai amongst global cities with multiple airports .
Future Plans:
Domestic and International Flights: Commercial operations are set to begin in December 2025, with airlines like IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa Air already announcing plans to launch services.
Expansion: The airport will be developed in phases, with the first phase facilitating 20 million passengers per annum and 0.5 million metric tonnes of cargo capacity .
