Sheikh Hasina Calls for Restoration of Democracy and Renewal of India–Bangladesh Ties.
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, currently in exile in India, has called for the restoration of “participatory democracy” in her country, urging for free, fair, and inclusive elections as a precondition for her return.
Speaking from an undisclosed location in India, Hasina emphasized that national reconciliation and respect for democratic institutions are essential for Bangladesh’s long-term stability and prosperity.
In an exclusive email interview, Hasina said the path to stability must begin with lifting the ban on her political party, the Awami League, which she described as “the voice of the people and the guardian of Bangladesh’s secular and democratic identity.” She argued that genuine democracy cannot function when opposition parties are silenced or exiled.
Hasina also expressed concern over the direction taken by the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, accusing it of straining bilateral relations with India and emboldening extremist forces in the region. She contrasted her government’s foreign policy—rooted in cooperation, connectivity, and regional stability—with what she termed as the “narrow and short-sighted” approach of the current leadership.
During her tenure, Hasina’s government fostered closer ties with India across key sectors, including security, trade, and energy. Analysts credit her administration with facilitating cross-border infrastructure projects and counter-terrorism coordination that benefited both nations. Many observers view the India–Bangladesh partnership as a cornerstone of South Asian stability, especially amid regional tensions and shifting global alliances.
Indian officials have not commented officially on Hasina’s remarks, but diplomatic sources suggest that New Delhi continues to advocate for a peaceful, democratic resolution in Bangladesh and values its longstanding friendship with the Awami League leadership.
As the political situation in Dhaka remains uncertain, Hasina’s statements highlight her continuing influence over Bangladesh’s democratic discourse. Her insistence on dialogue and inclusive governance reflects her enduring political presence and the complex interplay between domestic politics and regional diplomacy in South Asia.
