Live your life with an Owner’s Mindset—and stay blessed always.
When I was a child, my father once asked me to tidy up a few bookshelves in his room.
Eager to get back to playing, I rushed through the task, stacking the books carelessly. When I told him I was finished, he looked at the shelves, smiled, and asked me to sit down. Then he shared a story I have never forgotten.
An experienced carpenter once told his employer that he planned to retire. The employer was saddened but understood. Before letting him go, he requested one final favor: build just one last house.
The carpenter reluctantly agreed. Wanting to finish quickly, he cut corners, used subpar materials, and rushed through the job.
When the house was complete, the employer came for the final inspection. Instead of checking the workmanship, he handed the carpenter the keys.
“This is your house,” he said with a smile. “A gift from me to you.”
The carpenter was stunned. If he had known he was building his own home, he would have approached the project very differently. Instead, he was left to live in the house he had carelessly built.
My father looked at me and said, “You are always building your own house.”
Each day, the way you show up in the world determines the quality of the life you create. If you cut corners, rush through tasks, or settle for mediocrity, you will eventually have to live with those results. But if you invest in quality, pay attention to detail, and take pride in your work, you will also live with those results—and they will serve you well.
He added, “Son, live your life with an owner’s mindset. Before you act, ask yourself: If I had to live with this result forever, would I still do it this way?”
He gave an example: “If you are a carpenter making a fine chest of drawers, you may be tempted to use plywood on the back because nobody will see it. But you will know it’s there. Use good wood, even on the parts hidden from view. Integrity and quality should run through everything you do.”
That advice has stayed with me. I try to live by it every time I take on a task.
So, ask yourself:
What small daily actions are you overlooking that are quietly shaping your future?
What shortcuts today might turn into major cracks tomorrow?
An owner always takes pride in the details, because they know this truth: How you do one thing is how you do everything.
Live your life with an Owner’s Mindset—and stay blessed always.
